A Blessing of the Farm

On Saturday, March 18, we will gather to ask for God’s blessing on Tecolote Farm.  Below is the service that will be used as we process around the farm, praying for the land, the creatures, and the people who work the land.

The service below is adapted from the Book of Common Prayer and the Book of Occasional Services.  The Prayers for the Earth are from the Wartburg Seminary Center for Theology and Land Service for Rogation.

The Blessing of the Farm

Celebrant
People of God, from the beginning of Creation, God gave us land and ordered us to be good stewards of the gifts of creation. We gather today to ask God’s blessing on Tecolote Farm, the creatures that live here and the people who tend the land. Today, we pause to remember our call to stewardship and to celebrate the bounty of your creation.

Prayers for the Earth

Leader       O Creator God, with your breath you created light and darkness.
People        And it was good.

Leader       By your word, you created the heavens.
People       And it was good.

Leader       You created the dry land of the earth, and the waters of the sea.
People       And it was god.

Leader       By your word, you called forth growing things: plants, fruit, and trees.
People       And it was good.

Leader       You created the sun and the moon to order the days and nights.
People        And it was good.

Leader       You created the living creatures in the waters, and the living creatures of the air.
People       And it was good.

Leader       You created the living creatures of the land: cattle, and wild animals; everything that moves upon the land.
People       And it was good.

Leader       By your word, you created humankind – both female and male – to care for the earth and all that is over, on and in it.  And to these new creatures, you gave everything that you had made.
People        And it was good.

Celebrant   The Lord be with you.
People         And also with you.
Celebrant   Let us pray.

Collect for the Joy in God’s Creation

O heavenly Father, who has filled the world with beauty: Open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all your works; that, rejoicing in your whole creation, we may learn to serve you with gladness; for the sake of him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing of the Land and Greenhouses

Celebrant   Let us pray.
O gracious Father, who opened your hand and filled all things living with plenteousness: Bless the lands and waters, and multiply the harvests of the world; let your Spirit go forth, that it may renew the face of the earth; show your loving-kindness, that our land may give her increase; and save us from selfish use of what you give us, that men and women everywhere may give you thanks; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Canticle 12 (continued)

We give you thanks, most gracious God, for the beauty of earth and sky and sea; for the richness of mountains, plains, rivers and lakes; for the song of birds and the loveliness of flowers. We ask your blessing and give you thanks for all the marvelous creatures you have created to share this world with us. We praise you for these good gifts, and pray that we may safeguard them for our posterity. Grant that we may continue to grow in our grateful enjoyment of your abundant creation, to the honor and glory of your Name, now and forever. Amen.

Blessing of the People who work the Land

Celebrant   Let us pray.
Almighty God, in giving us dominion over things on earth, you made us fellow workers in your creation: Bless us who are called to do your work, give us wisdom and reverence so to use the resources of nature, that no one may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet to come may continue to praise you for your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Canticle 12 (continued)

Let the people of God glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
Glorify the Lord, O priests and servants of the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
Glorify the Lord, O spirits and souls of the righteous, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
You that are holy and humble of heart, glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
Let us glorify the Lord: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
In the firmament of his power, glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
